Does 10 Estimates Really Keep Everyone Honest?

Good Morning.

I attended a networking event this past Tuesday morning. One of the guys in the room told me how he just finished his roof and it was AWESOME.

He started telling me the features and warranties.

I stopped him and asked, "I thought you replaced your roof months ago?"

Response, "I got 10 estimates and couldn't decide."

As the scramble eggs projected out of my mouth..... 10 ESTIMATES..What do you need 10 for?

Response, "I wanted to keep everyone honest."

I was beside myself. He wasted everyone's time including his own. He didnt choose the lowest bidder. He didnt choose the highest. He made his decision based off What?

Does anyone else get this?

Please do me a favor for my sanity and leave a comment..

  1. 10 estimates for anything for any type of homeowner just confuses them. Get 3 reputable contractors and then it will be easier for everyone. We do pavers for a living, but sales are sales, we show customers 2 catalogs to choose from, most have trouble with 2, I can imagine what it would be like if I gave them 10 catalogs, it's overwhelming for most people to make a decision like that, especially large money important decisions that cant be changed easily.

  2. I understand this action, I deal with customers who want to think about it, agent ambush you (have one of your competitors there when you arrive), have four to six of your competitors cards lined up on the kitchen counter etc. The individual that does this has been ripped off before in many cases. Is looking for someone that he or she connects with, if you want the job you need to be keenly aware of that person's feeling and needs.

  4. 10 Estimates?? Seems like over kill. But then again, if he entered his name into one of those 'Find a Contractor' websites, he probably got 50 phone calls and narrowed it down to 10. My suggestion would be 3 reputable bids at most. Anymore and that could get very confusing!

  5. I have been one of those 10 estimates. It's frustrating to even try to sell yourself and your business. I try to qualify customers beforehand with a list of questions I have come up with over the years.
My company "Orlando Handyman" has won the #1 Handyman of Orlando slot for 3 years running on the Mojopages.com.
I usually get the bids I do because I stay at the customers home after the bid and assume the sale. Start scheduling install dates, ask the questions that are needed as if your already have the job.
Most of all listen to the customer! Ask them why there are so many bids being done what caused all this confusion. You just might connect with them in ways that surprise you.

  7. I gave an estimate to a client. he was a college professor. He called me after 2 weeks telling me that he already got 6 estimates and so far i am number 1 offer in term of work and price. and he is waiting on 2 more estimates. then he called me 2 weeks later asking some technical questions. then he called me 2 weeks later to schedule the job and we did. 48 hours before the he called me to cancel because of some BS excuse and promised to re-schedule. off course i never heard from him again. Time wasters that always think there is something better out their . http://weatherfoam.com/
